News Participated in the Japan-Vietnam Copyright Cooperation Project and Opinion Exchange Meeting hosted by the Agency for Cultural Affairs

As part of the FY 2024 Anti-Piracy Project (Japan-Vietnam Copyright Cooperation Project) hosted by the Agency for Cultural Affairs and operated by the Visual Industry Promotion Organization (VIPO), an opinion exchange meeting was held on July 23, 2024, with officials from the Copyright Office of Vietnam (COV) of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Vietnam, as well as publishers and other parties. CODA also participated in this meeting.
This project is implemented with the aim of supporting the exercise of rights and the return of compensation for Japanese rights holders in Vietnam, as well as promoting cultural exchange between the two countries. From Vietnam, six individuals, including Mr. Quan Tuan An (Director of the Copyright and Related Rights Management and International Cooperation Division), were invited to Japan.

At the opinion exchange meeting, Mr. Atsushi Ito from Shueisha Inc. / ABJ (Authorized Books of Japan) explained the current status and issues of pirate sites originating from Vietnam that infringe on Japanese content.
Yukari Nakamura, Deputy Senior Director of Operations of the Operations Division from CODA, participated and explained the current status of online piracy of Japanese content in five regions worldwide. She also introduced specific anti-piracy projects being implemented by CODA, including the results of international enforcement and public awareness activities targeting general consumers in Vietnam.

A discussion followed, during which active opinions were exchanged on the anti-piracy measures undertaken by the Vietnamese government, cooperation on copyright awareness activities, and the state of intellectual property law and its implementation in Vietnam.

Finally, Mr. An expressed, “Active exchanges of opinions were conducted, and I felt the strong determination of Japanese rights holders. We will strive to meet these expectations in the future.” Ms. Miho Kobayashi, Director of the Office for International Copyright Division at the Agency for Cultural Affairs, concluded the meeting by stating, “There were specific ideas for future resolutions during the discussions, and I hope that today’s meeting will serve as a starting point for greater collaboration.”

About CODA
CODA (Content Overseas Distribution Association) was established in 2002 at the call of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and the Agency for Cultural Affairs to promote the overseas development of Japanese content and take anti-piracy measures. Japan’s proud content, including music, movies, anime, broadcast programs, video games, and publishing, plays an important role in enhancing the nation’s international presence and economic growth. As digital technology becomes more widespread, it is even more significant to protect Japan’s content from increasingly artful copyright infringement and promote the content industry’s development. CODA contributes to the deterrence and detection of online and other piracy, by sharing knowledge with relevant government agencies, organizations, and companies in Japan and abroad, to engage in direct and indirect anti-piracy measures, as well as public relations activities.
