On October 28, 2024, CODA visited Oita Prefectural College of Arts and Culture, participating in a seminar led by Associate Professor Noda Yoshikuni, Department of Information and Communication. CODA also held an exchange session with 19 students from Noda’s seminar (first- and second-year students).
CODA and the college have been collaborating since February 2023 on the Digital Content Protection Project, an industry-academia initiative to protect intellectual property. As part of this project, students conduct voluntary patrols, gathering information on illegal uploads and sharing it with CODA. CODA then uses this data in its anti-piracy efforts and to assist CODA member companies in filing takedown requests. Additionally, the collaboration fosters information sharing between the college and CODA to explore effective anti-piracy measures, as well as educational and awareness-raising strategies, thereby strengthening the partnership.
On this visit, Mr. Sadanaka Sato from the IP Management & Business Affairs Department of TMS ENTERTAINMENT CO., LTD. accompanied CODA to provide feedback on the students’ activities from the perspective of a content rights holder. This created an opportunity to deepen students’ understanding of content protection and the promotion of legitimate distribution.
Mr. Sato presented an overview of TMS ENTERTAINMENT CO., LTD.’s infringement response efforts, which include measures against illegal videos and analysis of illegal uploads worldwide. He highlighted the importance of enhancing internet literacy to prevent illegal uploads through greater awareness.
In addition, Kazumi Mikami, head of CODA’s Automated Contents Monitoring Center, explained the objectives and significance of the Digital Content Protection Project to the seminar’s new students, also covering key points to consider when detecting illegal uploads.
During the exchange session, students shared their perspectives on internet literacy and the current state of illegal uploads on social media, expressing concerns about intellectual property protection from a youth viewpoint. Mr. Sato expanded the discussion beyond infringement response, sharing insights into content creation, thereby offering students a deeper understanding of the content industry.
CODA remains committed to promoting effective implementation of this project through industry-academia collaboration to safeguard intellectual property and will continue efforts in protection and public awareness initiatives.

About CODA
CODA (Content Overseas Distribution Association) was established in 2002 at the call of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and the Agency for Cultural Affairs to promote the overseas development of Japanese content and take anti-piracy measures. Japan’s proud content, including music, movies, anime, broadcast programs, video games, and publishing, plays an important role in enhancing the nation’s international presence and economic growth. As digital technology becomes more widespread, it is even more significant to protect Japan’s content from increasingly artful copyright infringement and promote the content industry’s development. CODA contributes to the deterrence and detection of online and other piracy, by sharing knowledge with relevant government agencies, organizations, and companies in Japan and abroad, to engage in direct and indirect anti-piracy measures, as well as public relations activities.
