On July 5, 2023, CODA was visited by Karyn A. Temple, Senior Executive Vice President and Global General Counsel, and Michael Schlesinger, Vice President and Regional Legal Counsel, Asia Pacific, for the Motion Picture Association, Inc. (MPA) of the United States.
MPA serves as the global voice and advocate of the motion picture, home video, and television industries. Its member studios are: Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures; Netflix Studios, LLC; Paramount Pictures Corporation; Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc.; Universal City Studios LLC; and Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. MPA works in every corner of the globe to advance the creative industry, protect its members’ content across all screens, defend the creative and artistic freedoms of storytellers, and support innovative distribution models that bring an expansion of viewing choices to audiences around the world.
CODA and MPA have been working together for many years against piracy in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond. To date, tens of thousands of enforcement actions, arrests and seizures have taken place.
In 2014, CODA and MPA signed a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to develop new good-practice laws and strengthen joint copyright protection efforts to combat the worldwide online piracy problem, and have built a strong partnership for close to 10 years.
CODA Representative Director Takero Goto and others participated in the meeting and shared information on recent activities and issues between CODA and MPA. We also exchanged views on a wide range of copyright protection activities and promised more collaboration between CODA and MPA.

About CODA
CODA (Content Overseas Distribution Association) was established in 2002 at the call of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and the Agency for Cultural Affairs to promote the overseas development of Japanese content and take anti-piracy measures. Japan’s proud content, including music, movies, anime, broadcast programs, and video games, plays an important role in enhancing the nation’s international presence and economic growth. As digital technology becomes more widespread, it is even more significant to protect Japan’s content from increasingly artful copyright infringement and promote the content industry’s development. CODA contributes to the deterrence and detection of online and other piracy, by sharing knowledge with relevant government agencies, organizations, and companies in Japan and abroad, to engage in direct and indirect anti-piracy measures, as well as public relations activities.
